I had one of those brief moments of clarity where I remember a part of my childhood that makes me need to look more into it. Today I remembered a certain frill necked lizard called Rocky, who with his camera, went around documenting and misinterpreting the various things humans do. A short internet search later and I was reunited with Lift Off; a nineties educational children’s show.
Lift Off was a weird show based on the troubles a group of kids experienced in life, broken up with seemingly random puppet segments, such as Wackadoo and Rocky. Rocky appeared to be the leader of the frill neck lizards and documented simple events in our lives and blew them out of proportion, inspiring a couple of laughs from young kids like myself. Wackadoo and other such shorts were the same. For me, it was more about those little extras that made the show worth watching, because the main part was damn creepy. I blame EC.
EC (stands for Every Child) is the doll that falls out of a garbage truck in front of a couple of children, and when they take it, EC turns out to be ALIVE. With no face, and an inability to talk, coupled with it’s very slow movement, for a kid as young as five years old this is really bloody scary.
Look at that image; if I saw that stretching out for me, I’d think it was after my soul and run away for fear of my life. I have no idea why those kids were so easy with him, or why they all wanted him so desperately.
I have found out that the show got itself a DVD release two years ago, which means I get to do some hunting.
Does anyone else remember this show? If you don’t, here’s a video of the intro to jog your memory:
