In-game advertising.

This is a screenshot from Quake Live, a fast paced multiplayer FPS. I just wanted to showcase an excellent form of monetizing that is seldom seen in gaming. It’s not intrusive, I can ignore it and treat it as part of the scenery, but it still gets seen. Furthermore, the developers get money from it and therefore keep making content.

While “billboard” advertising isn’t for every game, it’s good to see it being utilized effectively.

Portal 2 on Foxtel.

by ZombieSkittles on April 27, 2011

Watching television with the other half, we were greeted with the following:

I was extremely happy to see this; gaming doesn’t seem to get much mainstream media attention, and see adverts for these things on TV, even if it’s Foxtel, gives me a sort of hope that gaming will be taken more seriously in this country.

Hypocritical?

by ZombieSkittles on December 1, 2009

Today while surfing the net, I made the normal visit to YouTube that we all eventually make. As to be expected, Google had an ad on the main page. It was massive.

I know you’re probably saying “that’s not too big, it seems the normal size”, but that’s not the whole ad. You wait 10 seconds, and this happens.

It turns out all those spotlight videos are fake, and the whole thing is a clickable ad for Coca Cola, that leads to their Facebook page.

Now, I’m no expert in Google’s Terms Of Service when it comes to Adsense for us, but I’m pretty sure that if you disguise an ad as anything but an ad but to gain clicks, you instantly get booted from their program without any chance of appeal (they say you can, but honestly, I can’t say I’ve ever heard of it working.).

Now, here they are on one of their own sites doing just that. As someone who uses Adsense (rather poorly, I might add), I can’t see how they can do this, while the most I can do to mine is put them underneath a rather nice looking horizontal bar (doesn’t the bar above the ads just look so good? I have to admit, it turns me on a little bit.). I’m not sure if the ad in question is actually an Adsense ad, but surely they should adhere to their own rules, at least for the sake of consistency? Am I completely wrong in my assumption, or have they changed the rules? TELL ME!

Casino Advertisement

by ZombieSkittles on October 9, 2009

While hanging at Glenelg a couple of days ago with the amazing Brittster, we encountered this advertisement at the Tram-stop:

100_1403 If you squint, you can see me in the reflection! But that’s irrelevant.

Now, I was aware of the advertisement’s existence; staff at the Casino get a newsletter discussing happenings at the workplace, and this was revealed as the marketting campaign for the Ladies Poker they’re holding.

I always find the Casino’s attempts at advertising hilarious and eye catching, this one included. However, I’ve heard others expressing wide ranging opinions of the ad. Some find it funny too, don’t get it, or misinterpret it. But there are also a few who find it crass and inappropriate.

My question to you, is what do you think of it? Do you have an opinion on the matter? Do you even care?

Futile money grabbing

by ZombieSkittles on July 12, 2009

I’ve tried it in the past and it failed me, but I decided to start advertising on a few of my sites again in hopes of getting maybe a few dollars extra. The idea is that I already write on these sites for free as my own personal hobby of sorts, so if I manage to make a few extra dollars here or there through it, then that’s just an awesome perk.

Currently I have two types of ‘ads’ on my sites. First, the obvious advertisements are the Google Adsense ads at the bottom of posts. They’ve never earned me anything in the past, but I’ve decided that it’d be better to have them just in case.
The other attempt at additional moneymaking is through a small amount of affiliate marketing. On this site to the right, there is an image of the 31DDDB eBook. The book is for sale for roughly twenty dollars through ProBlogger, and focuses on helping a user make content for their blog. The image is a link to the product’s information page, where you can buy it from. The trick is that it’s an affiliate link, and buying it through that link gives me a percentage of the sale. I don’t know if this will actually make any sales (it’s made absolutely nothing so far), but once again, if it worked even once and got me a few dollars, it would be worthwhile.

It’s pointless and I doubt it will help bring in any significant money, but I’m willing to try anything.
