Well it’s 2011, who’d of thunk it? We’re one year away from the end of the world, so I thought it’d be a good idea to actually list some New Years Resolutions I can adhere to. These are resolutions I’ll be able to stick with and complete. They’ll have a positive effect on my life if I do them properly. Here they are:

No buying games. Between the ten or eleven games I got from the Humble Indie Bundle, the Steam Treasure Hunt Sale, the Steam Holiday Sale, and those I just haven’t finished yet, I’m pretty good for games. So, I will not be buying any games for the entire year, excluding a few gems which I unfortunately feel I must have as soon as they come out. They are as follows:
- Duke Nukem Forever
- Diablo 3
- Portal 2
- Half Life 2: Episode 3
- Rage
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Pokémon Black & White

- DOTA 2
There might be others that come out, but I am vowing to wait on those, and wait I must. However, to incentivise the next resolution there is an extra exception.

Run at least twelve kilometres a month. This is an easy one; all I need to do is go for a run almost once every two days and I’ll be okay. As an incentive for myself, for every 2 kilometres I go over the twelve I’ve set for that month, I’m giving myself a “point”. For every point, I can spend a whole dollar on a game. So if I’ve done eighteen kilometres worth of running that month, I have three dollars to spend on a game. This sort of reward system means I won’t be able to buy a game unless I have done a lot of running in the month. I’m hoping this works as well as it does in my head.

No purposely leaving early from work. This rule is specifically linked to the “Leave Early Book” at work. This year, I plan to not touch the book at all until I have done and received my tax. There will be exceptions in the form of family emergencies and sickness, but in those cases I shouldn’t need to book it so much as just leave anyway.

Finish a Wolfenstein 3D Mod. I love Wolfenstein 3D, always have always will. Since joining the active modding community in 2004, I have started and given up on numerous mods. Right now I’m working on a simple one which I want released by the end of the year so I can finally cross it off my list of things to do.

Build my new computer. With the help of my housemate Paul, I will be saving up and buying the parts to build a new computer, capable of actually playing decent games decently. I see this as being the first one to knock off the list, but yeah.

Win NaNoWriMo this year. Fuck yeah.

The quote is listed as being by “Unknown Author” who it seems has made quite a few memorable quotes. Anyway, on topic.

I’m not making a new years resolution of any sort this year. Why? Well, lets look at last years resolutions:

Get my Ls

Lose 5 kilograms

Finish this year’s NaNoWriMo

No eating fast food

Move out

Get an orbital piercing

Watch 26 movies in the cinema

Buy an acoustic guitar

Buy a top hat

Stick with the video making thing, no matter how crap they are.

Learn a language

Now, lets list the ones I actually managed to do:

Get my Ls

Ok. So I’ve sort of kept with the video making, but I did stop doing it for a major period of time so I cannot count it. So, I can’t keep all those relatively simple resolutions, and I feel pretty shit for it. So I decided this year, I have skipped the whole affair, and therefore skip disappointment. See what I’ve done?

Is anyone else skipping the resolutions thing in favour of just enjoying the start of the decade?
